Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian navigator, had the honor of giving his name to the New World. In 1499, Vespucci sailed along the coast of South America. His writings caught the attention of a mapmaker who, in 1507, named the new land America. In 1522, Ferdinand Magellan succeeded in reaching Asia by sailing west.
